Jul firande hemma hos oss med en blandning av Italiensk Pasta in brodo and Svensk sill och skinka. Jag och barnen har haft ett skönt jullov och vi ser inte fram emot dagis skola och jobb som börjar nästa vecka, men först har vi nyårsfirandet att se fram emot vi ska till ett Spansk/Baskiskt par som bor utanför London i Maidstone så ser fram emot lite luftutbyte.

Getting ready for christmas... or at least as much as you can while 28 week preggo and with two little monsters to look after, and since we have decided against traveling this christmas we are going to experience a London christmas for the first time ever even if I have been a resident for 14 years...
I even got a Swedish frozen"Julskinka" in IKEA and have already baked two loads of "lussebullar" just missing the ubiquitous Aladdin chocolates box.

Manors, castles and cobbled streets

last weekend Italian Nonno took us to Bath and on the way back past Stonehenge.
We stayed in a very nice place on the way there with a beautiful garden Newbury Manor Hotel the name evokes Jane Austen heroines for me and going to Bath was another evocative journey. I met up with Danish Maya an old friend of mine and met her little son Jonas and they showed me how great Bath is for kids we went to have a coffe and play in the kids theatre The Egg next door to the Theatre Royal. Thinking about it makes me wanna move to Bath, it seems such a civilized place, but as my friend was telling me rents and house prices are very high.
On the way home we stopped by Stonehenge and it is impressive still even as it is presented today and even though you are made to walk on a conveyor belt around the monument listening to a dull text in headphones rather then taking in the atmosphere of the place, anyway with a little wild 2 year old I didn't manage to really take it in fully, should go back there on midsummers eve. We also managed to stop by at Windsor castle, and we had a peek into the hugh park outside of it, and nonno was impressed maybe by the essence of Englishness.

Hemma några dagar i Svedala, hjälpte till lite hos syrran, som har nytt hus.
Det var så vackra ljusa kvällar och att bo på landet gav ett härligt avbrott från vårt dagliga London förorts liv. Ungarna älskade det, det är underbart att ha ett sånt ställe att besöka och varva ner, komma nära naturen och känna gödsel lukten.

Been to a secondhand car dealer today not an easy thing to buy a car for us
we have been confined to a 1981 Fiat from Argentina last 2 years and now that's not deemed safe by my partner so we need to find a new/old car. I want a automatic so I don't have to worry too much about not finding the biting point and stalling at redlights.
But had enough of condesending salesmen. But we will continue to search tomorrow!

stayed in most of today but managed a visit to our local Anerley library that is threatened by closure, so these days I really want to support it, would be terrible loss if it went.
Talking about books, I am fascinated by the conflict between Stieg Larsson's widow Eva Gabrielson and his brother and father, who inherited everything. There is lesson in there for us all about greed, family and freedom. When its concerning millions of pounds and the success of his books is so ballistic so really there are a lot of money involved, the worst comes out in people, its hard to know who is right and wrong, when both parties obviously have opposing views and say different things, but an interview on Swedish TV with the brother of Stieg made me change my mind in favour of the biological family since she doesn't seem to want to talk with them and they are offering her involvement and to become board member of the estate etc. but she is all about revenge, she wont take any crumbles offered she wants all the control or nothing.

On my way back from a party in Bellingham leisure centre i took a walk down to Catford. Somehow it seemed like another world with its Jamaican market stalls and indian hair shops, and the Broadway theatre with its Art deco, grade II listed glory is a landmark, but the stagedoor cafe seems to have passed its glory days.

Our new place that is still a mess but I like the way the light is reflected on the laminate floor which by the way is called "Nordic Pine" and on the walls we have painted a matt Swedish white (alias stockholms vit ) As one of our visiting friends commented "I can see Ebba choose the colours looks like we're in IKEA" I wasn't amused as you can guess, but I suppose I rather have IKEA look then a dark rustique style.
The canal is right at the end of our garden and among the large trees is our own pear tree full of fruit, a remainder from the orchard there used to be on these grounds.

I took my son to the street where I grew up, it was surprisingly emotional when I showed him the stones where I used to play as a child, it felt like yesterday I was running around there, and my body rememberd the feeling of the stone under my fingers.

We had Oscars 4th birthday on Saturday I was exhausted afterwards and swear never to do another kids party ever again...
Then on Sunday we where treated to some Sardinian delicacies by a friend, kids where roaming their huge garden! Made me feel I was somewhere else then London, but then with the sky so quiet and blue these vulcanic days London is not the same.

are beautiful but horrific evidence of crimes done to these young children.
This girl she likes to dress in a pretty dress just like any other little girl! When I see these children I have to think about my own kids and it puts thinkgs in perspective, how much love and affection they are getting and how little some other kids have.

The childrenhomes are still there in Bulgaria there has been similar mal treatment of children, as highlighted in the BBC documentary Bulgaria's abandoned children.
How can this happen in Europe today?
if you want to support these children this is another charity doing great work there.

The project im working on at the moment is together with the illustrator and artist Linda Bondestam, who illustrates brilliantly surreal childrens books in Swedish language in Finland. She draws on the rich heritage of Tove Jansson and the Moomins, but has a strong individual voice, so it is very big pride I have started a collaboration with her.

Staying up late plus baby who wakes up 4 times at night is not a good receipt.
I was given a book by another mum this week she came and rang the door one morning before rushing off to work, said you might find it useful, so now im trying to get time to read "the no-cry sleep solution" by Elizabeth Pantley, I have never been a fan of all these routines that you can do to get baby to sleep such as the contented baby book, but I like the tone in this one, wether it works or not for us is another matter.
This is the latest animation from talented Max Hattler who also works with his equally talented Japanese companion Noriko Okaku.

Been a good start of the week got some great news from Finland will have to go to Helsinki soon
wich reminds me I have to book a lot of tickets for all the trips we have planned...
but at the moment Im happy to be here in my own space doing, planning drinking my coffe while Gaia is asleep and the wild one at his lovely nursery.. we are so lucky in so many ways and I don't usually take time to appreciate it. It must have bee the influence of Valentines day or the new year of the Tiger... or is it simply that its carneval time and everything seems to be possible.
Im so happy for the Swedish win yesterday in the Olympics and so is my mom! Kalla forever!!

these days I have spent with my nearest family in Sweden, the landscape is almost unaturally beautiful, white glistering snow covering forgivingly the landscape.
Playing and screaming in equal measures at the kids my own and the cousins, playing games and trying to loose graciously, loving to be with my family and wanting space in my head to think, trying to get a perspective on my usual life.

It was very cold today and my feet froze in my leather boots, but the light was beautiful and we found a treehouse in one corner of the park, where Oscar pretended he was watching TV, thats probably a sign he is watching too much of it.

I am more christmasy this year then ever before, I was never big on xmas decorations and baking but now I have done both ginger biscuits, saffronbuns and marsipan figures in chocolat, to cheer us up today since we have been confined indoors the whole day, since Oscar is ill. Here its snowing big flakes and it feels very Nordic.

Had friends visiting these days and it all went to fast wanted more chats and laughs, have't seen them together since we finished college so it was revisiting of past memories, and hopefully we see eachother before 7 years past again.
Just makes me think about how time is fast and that all the are days passing by. But also that time can be relative and that people dont seem to change that much.

Today we had a nice day together, laughing a lot, that my daughter has a sense of humour is clear.

My neighbour knocked on my door he had been given my parcel by the postoffice by mistake. I was happy to find it was my order from Shelf that had arrived. They have finally opened a online shop for those of us that don't live on Brick lane, cool has suddenly come a bit closer!
This nice cup is by Japanese illustrator Shinzi Katoh, will be a christmas gift for Osci.

Science Museum and our Fiat

Went to South Kensington to the Science museum. A day for the kids, Oscars friend and he had a great time in the play areas of the museum. There we saw the original version of our car the Fiat 600S displayed, to my partners pride. Science museum is such a great place for kids, and there were a lot of them so for us adults it was not the most relaxing Sunday, hubby went early to bed to catch up with the sleep.
We had a busy weekend with Thanksgiving party yesterday, and looking for a new car... we love our Fiat 600 in the pictures above but being a family with 2 kids we really could do with a bit more space, and now when I know it is actually fit for the museum im even more worried about driving it.
Hoping I will be able to go to the Design Museums Animation event organised by Ranko Andjelic.

Bumped into Elliot in our local park today and had some fun looking for treasures, and leaves. Oscar scared me the other day he came into the room feet and hands completely covered in a dark matter... that later transpired to be water solvable stuff, but he gave me a fright. We got these lovely felt figures in a autumn activity pack from our local cornershop man for free and I just had to do something with them, I love the eyes made of plastic that you glue on begs to be played with... my son is still a bit too small for anything co-ordinated creative activity, he doesn't want to do what you are supposed to, he paints with the glue, and puts more paint on his body theb on the paper, all the glitter on the floor and he cuts up my drawings wih scissors... I go crazy and fall out of my role as the creative teacher and become a cleaning fixated mum... I dont wanna be like that ... I would like to not care about crumbs and paint going on the floor, but I do and there will inevitable be more mess for a while longer...

I received my moo cards in the post,(even as there is a strike)! So now I can happily give out my business cards to anyone who wants one.
I went into a local shop today that sells school uniforms etc, and I found these lovely socks for Gaia proper English quality, vintage but not second hand, and these swimming trunks that Im not sure I will ever get Oscar to wear, there were others really lovely size 12 but I think it even less likely he will wanna wear them when he turns 12. Mummy loves them, though.

kids played and we had a lovely Ragu made by my Italian friend, this week we are socialising alot since my partner is away, and we don't want to be home alone so we keep busy.

Had a friend over for tea, I made swedish food upon request and made my first macaroni gratin (makaronipudding)
Easy as anything: serves 2 adults and 2 children
boil 4 dl macaroni or small pasta shapes very al dente
cool under tap and drain well
pop into butterd oven pan
whisk 1 egg 3 dl of milk and cream, season with salt black peppar and a pinch of nutmeg.
pour over, add meat to taste, ham I used bacon that i fried first.
grate loads of good cheese over
pop in 225ºc for 30 min.

my favourites from flickr are mostly kids lately probably since I am nurturing my newly started group on flickr "Wild kids" which is a bit like raising a child, it needs a lot of attention and care or it will wilt an die.
I found so many wonderfully wild and etherally looking children on flickr.
I am fashinated by the idea of the wild child, with wild I mean true to its own soul, a child which is happy and self contained, and in contact with the wild and the very innocent. I feel that I have found several photos that portrays those feelings.

The last days at my parents we had Surströmming a fish that is sour, preserved in something acidic, it stinks so my dad had alot of trouble to open the can outdoors and then getting rid of the can, however he then eats the stinking fish with potatoes, flatbread, and chopped red onions with a lot of pleasure.

its such a lovely space to be in, my sisters house and I appreciated to stay with them so did my son who loves his cousins to death, we just whish we saw eachother more often. I love when we or she make cakes and we watch silly romantic comedies or thrillers late at night once the kids have finally fallen asleep. Just to share the life of another family for awhile is very rich, and living an expats life in London makes it so much more rare...

At my sisters house where everything is beautiful to behold and photograph, since she is a interior photographer its a bit like living in a set, but a lived in one, there are enough toys littering the floor for it to feel very authentic.
We have been eating very nice food as well since she was working with a chef, taking foodie pictures and later we ate the food yummy warm salmon, feta and colliflower salad.

My parents place is in Funbo outside of Uppsala, beautiful green landscape punctuated by ancient meadows with Rune stones, and cows grassing. The air is filled with the sweet scent of autumn, but the days have been surprisngly warm, and the kids have gone around in short sleeves.
We have been having fun Oscar has been playing with his older cousins and we made some cutouts with which they created a little drama that I edited to a little film the 6 yearold was very happy.

the baby is sleeping, I have just spoken with friend M. on the phone for 45 min, her worries are worse then mine so it is a relief for both of us, i listen to her and I also feel better myself.
Then I called my IT savvy friend G. and he helped me on the way to solve my problem.
The real problem however is not technical it is wound up in a lot of emotions and is one of self belief and courage.

Morgon på farfars hotel, Oscar vaknar först av alla och vill gå ut efter ha väckt mig, vi går ut barfota och lyssnar på tuppen, träffar en liten katt unge, sen kommer farfar/nonno han blir chockad att vi går barfota, vi går tillsammans och dricker cappuccino och äter nybakta cornetti (Italienska croissanter).

We had some nice visitors today Anna and her baby brother Isak. Then we had a play in a park with one of the few sandpits around here. Oscar got stung by a bee but was fine...
Tomorrow we are off to the Italian Consulate to get the passport for little sister, then we can finally start planning our holidays, cant wait!

Fairy cakes and Sainsbury days

Today has been a day at Sainsbury, we spent several hours eating in their new style restaurant which is actually nice, no really, and great for kids food, their caffe latte is not bad either. I'm thinking of bringing my sketchbook next time and do some people watching, a great place for it.
Then I did a bit of driving around the parkinglot of my partners Fiat 600 (looks like Luigi from Cars). I have yet to brave the main roads, have to get used to its little quirks. When I stopped I realised I hadn't released the handbreak whilst driving thats why it felt a bit weird! I felt very sorry for my partner who's pride and joy is this car.. but its nothing our favourite mechanics the Gonella brothers can't fix!

I don't know if these are Norwegian I doubt, but this art show by 26Oslo I'm sure will be interesting, the nice people from Cosmicmegabrain are behind it, and they do know how to throw a party. Its on until the 2nd so check it out.
